N scale projects

Postby galaxy_gfx on 09 Oct 2017, 13:29

Hi,

As an introduction to my modeling work, I'd like to share some photos of past and ongoing N scale projects.

Some C64K with coal load:
http://galaxy.impulzus.com/tmp/rail/cn/c64k/

HXN3 carbody parts and bogies:
http://galaxy.impulzus.com/tmp/rail/cn/hxn3/

DF7D bogies (carbody to come soon):
http://galaxy.impulzus.com/tmp/rail/cn/df7d/
This one is going to be just an approximation of the prototype, using an old Life-Like GP38 mechanism. At the time I started construction, I had no drawings at hand, but the type seemed to be a good exercise to gain experience in fitting complicated roof details.

Finally, a modified CMR DF4B:

Most of the scratch-built models are urethane castings. The molds don't hold for too many copies (not using a proper vacuum chamber), but in most cases, some spare shells can be cast if anyone is interested...

Cheers,
Zsolt

Thanks! Some update on the DF7D:

http://galaxy.impulzus.com/tmp/rail/cn/ ... 1014_2.jpg
http://galaxy.impulzus.com/tmp/rail/cn/ ... 1014_3.jpg

This is already a raw resin casting of the shell, with deburring and filling of air bubbles yet to be done. The rooftop radiator louvers will be glued on separately to allow free combination of open and closed louver castings.

Some progress on the HXN3 roof:

The dynamic brake section will have a diferent insert for the louvered version. Also, the radiator section is built as a separate insert to make installation of the radiator grills easier.

Recent work on the DF7D:

Radiator louver masters:

(The rest of the patterns on the tray are louvers, intakes and window frames for various DF4 versions)

Four shells (for 0002 and 0021 in green, 0027 and 0028 in orange):

My job has kept me busy the past months, but I had, at least, time to make some first castings for the box car masters. So here they are, still awaiting trimming:

Raw side castings:

P61 side detail:

P64 side detail:
http://galaxy.impulzus.com/tmp/rail/cn/p/p64_180124.jpg

Roof castings:
http://galaxy.impulzus.com/tmp/rail/cn/p/p_180124_1.jpg
http://galaxy.impulzus.com/tmp/rail/cn/p/p_180124_2.jpg

Door castings:

Hope to get back to the HXN3 in the next weeks and apply the details printed out back in December...

At long last - progress with the HXN3:
http://galaxy.impulzus.com/tmp/rail/cn/ ... 0204_0.jpg

The slab at the bottom of the shell is just a temporary spacer for the time the glue sets:
http://galaxy.impulzus.com/tmp/rail/cn/ ... 0204_1.jpg

The next step will be filling the gaps and forming a proper edge between side walls and roof:
http://galaxy.impulzus.com/tmp/rail/cn/ ... 0204_2.jpg

Just for the fun of it - in good company:

Some advances with “cosmetic work” on the HXN3:

http://galaxy.impulzus.com/tmp/rail/cn/ ... 0218_0.jpg
http://galaxy.impulzus.com/tmp/rail/cn/ ... 0218_1.jpg
http://galaxy.impulzus.com/tmp/rail/cn/ ... 0218_2.jpg

As you can see, some finishing touches are still needed for the corners, and some details (fuel filler studs, fuel gauges, AC unit grills) need to be added. Once this is done, I'll do the final shell castings. Meanwhile, I started designing the underbody and pilot details. These will probably be a combination of 3D printed and hand-made parts to avoid layering artifacts on curved or inclined surfaces. Also, some of the air pipes will probably be bent wire pieces applied separately to the cast resin underbody cores.

Recent progress with the DF7D – frame adapters filling the gap between the GP38 frame and the full-width shell:

Coupler pockets are also in preparation. They will fit Bachmann's E-Z Mate Mk II couplers. These allow more tolerance in coupler height (which can be an issue with some of the older CMR Line stock).
