Just a minor technical note:

The protruding rim on top of the side walls was glued onto the shell master as a separate detail (white styrene strips, with UV-curing glue). This is visible in this picture, too:

Well, this is something I will definitely avoid with the W5/W6 masters, as the rims did not take it too well to be removed from the silicone mould. In fact, I plan to assemble the curved roof of the W cars on a base plate of thin sheet styrene, copy the whole roof assembly in resin, and glue it as a single piece on top of the W5 and W6 shell masters.

It sounds simple, but maintaining equal base plate thickness may pose its own challenges... will post results as soon as the roof is done.

Cheers,
Zsolt

...So here they are, some in-progress pictures of the W5 and W6 cars:

Still lots of details to be added, but next year's N scale crops will have their fertilizers shipped properly in W series cars, I'm quite sure of it...

Cheers,

Zsolt

Truly amazing work!

Do you use these skills you have in your normal everyday work or are these skills you have learnt just for your hobby?

Thanks for the compliment! Being an automation/robotics research engineer, my job has, in itself, little to do with model railways - nevertheless, both profession and hobby do benefit from each other. Sometimes, I use very much the same prototyping and casting techniques whenever some precise parts are needed at my job, and being used to handling small components, the finer SMD soldering jobs also regularly end up at my desk at work. It also works the other way around: the cab design for the DF7D, for example, was done with software I usually use to run mathematical models.

Masters for the hand brake platforms for P62, W5 and W6:

Once these are cast, all resin parts will be complete for the boxcars.
