Chinese concrete catenary pole 1-87 scale prototyping

Post by petit panda » 03 May 2015, 17:30

I experimented 3D printing to create a prototype of a typical Chinese concrete catenary pole.

The 2D design of the pole was inferred from photos of the real rail network without any genuine drawing available at that time.

I used FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) technology available from a community fab lab close to my home. Although I am quite happy with the accuracy of the scale model, the removal of the printing support material (numerous plastic threads) is quite difficult and requires a tedious finishing of the part. It was my first ever produced model with a 3D printing technology so I need to experiment more.

The material used is ABS and the process time is about 36 minutes for one pole with 3 gr. of raw material.

Any feedback from your own experience with 3D printing FDM technology is welcome.
